Headline: Qatar Boosts Power Generation in Northern Syria with Azerbaijani Gas Pipeline Project
Qatar's ongoing efforts to alleviate power shortages in northern Syria have taken a significant step forward with the funding of a natural gas pipeline project from Azerbaijan through Turkey. This initiative will increase power availability in the region, marking Qatar’s third significant action to address severe power outages.
The Azerbaijani gas pipeline project, backed financially by Qatar, allows the export of 6 million cubic meters of gas daily (around 2 billion cubic meters annually) into northern Syria, notably benefiting Aleppo and helping lay the groundwork for further infrastructure development financed by foreign investors.
Despite these efforts, power availability is projected to improve only to about five hours a day, a notable increase from the former 20-hour daily shortages but still limited. Qatar’s involvement is part of a broader economic engagement in Syria, including a $4 billion investment deal to redevelop Damascus International Airport and other infrastructure projects, reinforcing Qatar’s soft power and role in Syria’s post-conflict reconstruction.
Syrian officials have recognized Qatar’s electricity sector support as a qualitative step towards national economic recovery, highlighting the scale of support which includes a second phase delivering 800 megawatts. The project is expected to support power generation in the region, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.
Meanwhile, global politics continue to evolve. The US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on buyers of Russian oil, a move that could drive up crude prices and severely impact India and China, Moscow's biggest customers. Elsewhere, China and Russia are conducting joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan and planning to carry out patrols in parts of the Pacific.
In other news, the UAE is introducing virtual Emiratis to promote its AI strategy, starting with a little girl asking the public to name her. The UAE is among the top five cities adopting AI technology, according to a recent study.
Lastly, Brazil's Supreme Court has put former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest ahead of his trial over an alleged coup plot. The court's decision marks a significant development in Brazil's political landscape.
