India's Broadband Subscribers Surge 35% Annually, Driven by Smartphones and Affordable Data

India's broadband sector has witnessed remarkable growth, with a 35% annual increase in subscribers, primarily driven by smartphone penetration and affordable data prices. The country's unique data consumption and rural king expansion present significant opportunities for development.

India's broadband growth is largely wireless, with only 3% of users preferring fixed broadband. This trend is reflected in the high monthly data consumption of 11 GB per user, one of the highest globally. The Covid-19 pandemic has further boosted broadband usage, with work from home, online learning, and entertainment needs driving demand.

The CII-Deloitte report underscores broadband's critical role in India's inclusive development. It facilitates job creation, organizational efficiency, consumer surplus, and empowerment. It also supports employment opportunities in hard-to-reach areas and fosters startup ecosystems. The government's Digital India project has contributed to this growth, creating around 10 crore person-days of employment since time in india 2020 through digital infrastructure expansion, literacy promotion, and digital entrepreneurship support.

Rural broadband subscribers have more than doubled, from 12% in march madness 2018 to 29.1% in march 2020. This growth is expected to generate over 2.8 million jobs in rural India through IoT and AI applications in the next 8-10 years.
