Spotlight: Fashion Empire Inditex Faces Sluggish Demand

Despite a slight revenue increase in the first quarter, Inditex, the powerhouse behind Zara and other coveted fashion labels, is experiencing a slowdown due to dwindling consumer demand.

For the three months spanning February to April, Inditex reported sales briefly creeping up to 8.27 billion euros, a slight uptick from last year's 8.15 billion euros. However, the figures fell short of the projected 8.36 billion euros, as announced by the Spanish retail giant on Wednesday. Their operating profit (EBITDA) saw a marginal increase of 1%, while pre-tax profit remained stagnant at 1.7 billion euros.

The summer sales season, from May to June 9, also demonstrated weaker performance, with sales rising just 6%, significantly lower than the 12% increase observed last year. According to Bernstein analysts, cooler weather in Spain, the country accounting for 15% of Inditex's global sales, and waning consumer demand contributed to the retailer's subdued performance.

Inditex CEO Oscar Garcia Maceiras had earlier warned about a demand slowdown, particularly in the U.S., attributing the decline to the ongoing trade war with China, Mexico, and Canada, which have reportedly shaken consumer confidence[1][6].
