Industrial Decarbonization: Collaboration Key to Overcoming Hurdles
Decarbonizing the industrial sector, a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, faces substantial hurdles. Key challenges include lack of collaboration among modeling teams and detachment from policymakers, as well as the 'hard to abate' nature of emissions due to high-temperature processes and unproven technologies. Data availability and comparability also pose issues across countries.
Our website and partner institution have reviewed existing approaches to industrial-sector modeling, highlighting strengths and weaknesses. A recent workshop hosted by our website in May 2023 brought together modeling teams and policymakers to address these challenges. The event focused on fostering collaboration and dialogue to produce high-quality data for policy-making.
Each energy-intensive subsector of industry has unique decarbonization approaches and challenges. Modeling the effectiveness of policies in these sectors is complex due to model limitations and data availability. While a 2023 workshop focusing on collaboration and deep decarbonization was not found, the need for such events is evident.
To tackle the hard-to-abate emissions from heavy industry, improved collaboration among modelers, policymakers, and interested parties is crucial. Transparency and dialogue should be fostered to produce reliable data for policy-making. Future workshops focusing on these challenges are encouraged to drive progress in decarbonizing the industrial sector.
