Installation of Fresh Traffic Signals at Wadden Crossing Site

Starting from today, traffic at the roundabout in Wadern's town center (Merzig-Wadern district) resumes its regular flow. The state road authority (LfS) has replaced the previous one-way traffic management, which was a temporary fix due to a significant road settlement in Franz-Haas-Straße at the end of March.

To ensure safety and seamless traffic, the roundabout at Franz-Haas-Straße / Birkenfelder Straße / Unterstraße will now be controlled by a 3-phase traffic light system with pedestrian crossings. Meanwhile, Johannisstraße will be a one-way street moving towards Egon-Reinert-Straße.

In March 2023, a road settlement (L 366, Franz-Haas-Straße, north of the roundabout) was discovered, necessitating the closure of the lane towards Dagstuhl for safety reasons. The repair work requires the construction of a new culvert beneath the affected section, which serves as a "culvert" for the Wadrill stream. Severe corrosion damage was found, leading to erosion in the backfill and subsequently, the road settlements. The lengthy process of planning and completion for the new construction is expected to span several years. The LfS is actively exploring provisional solutions to reopen L 366 as soon as possible.

Common measures for road settlement issues might include temporary stabilization, traffic diversions, monitoring, drainage improvements, or partial reopening while repairs are underway. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, visit the official LfS Saarland website, check the Wadern town hall website, or monitor local news sources. Direct contact with the LfS or local authority will also provide the most current plans regarding the reopening of L 366. As of this writing, specific details about the ongoing investigations or provisional solutions for L 366 in Wadern town center are not publicly available. Be sure to consult these resources for the latest updates on the situation.

  1. Due to the prolonged repair work on L 366 (Franz-Haas-Straße) following the road settlement, the state road authority (LfS) may need to seek financial aid from the industry sector to meet the project's expenses, ensuring the smooth flow of transportation in the area.
  2. With the resumption of regular traffic flow in Wadern's town center and the ongoing repair works on L 366, the finance department in Merzig-Wadern district should analyze the temporary traffic management costs and consider the possible impact on the district's future budget in the transportation sector.
