Trucks Overflowing Highways in Lower Saxony: A Need for More Parking Spots
Inadequate Number of Truck Parking Spots Found in Lower Saxony, According to Auto Club - Insufficient Parking Spaces Still a Major Issue in Lower Saxony, According to Auto Club
In Lower Saxony, too few truck parking spaces on highways is a pressing issue, as revealed by a survey by Auto Club Europa (ACE). This extreme shortage is causing a headache, with the occupancy rate of parking areas averaging a staggering 150% during the survey period from April to June.
ACE volunteers inspected 13 rest areas on the A2 and A7 motorways between April 15 and June 3. On workdays, they counted 690 parking spaces but found 1,032 parked trucks, with 77% of the inspected parking areas compromised as trucks were parked in entrance and exit lanes or on the hard shoulder [ACE Data].
The highest occupancy in Lower Saxony was at the Zweidorfer Holz Süd rest area on the A2 between Peine and Braunschweig, where 195 trucks were squeezed into just 94 spaces, resulting in an occupancy rate of 207% [ACE Data]. Nationwide, the occupancy rate was 151%, with 5,088 parking spaces for 7,664 parked trucks.
While ACE emphasizes that individual observations should not be over-interpreted, the general shortage of parking spaces is becoming more apparent. The association is advocating for the creation of tens of thousands of additional truck parking spaces nationwide, including addressing particularly dangerous areas used as emergency parking [ACE].
Behind the scene, Lower Saxony is part of research and collaboration efforts to accurately quantify the demand for truck parking spaces and develop expanded and optimized rest areas. The focus is on increasing parking capacity through new rest area developments and making efficient use of existing spaces to accommodate more trucks safely [Studies]. As our roads become filled with electric trucks, charging infrastructure during mandatory rest periods is also being considered in forward-looking parking infrastructure plans [Emerging Needs].

In light of the ACE survey, it's crucial to implement vocational training programs for transportation professionals to manage and optimize parking areas effectively. This could lead to efficient use of existing spaces and the creation of new parking spots, especially for electric trucks, as part of community policy. Additionally, funding from finance and collaboration with the automotive industry could be crucial in establishing such vocational training programs and infrastructure projects.
