Intercity Train Route: Mexico to Toluca - Construction at Vasco de Quiroga Station Linking to Santa Fe
The Mexico City-Toluca Interurban Train, popularly known as "El Insurgente," is making steady progress, according to updates in May 2025. The railway will eventually reach the Observatory area, where a multimodal transportation hub is being constructed for smooth transitions among various systems.
Notably, the train will interconnect with Line 1 of the Mexico City Metro System and the extension of Line 12, offering improved travel options to residents of Toluca, State of Mexico. The completed project will enhance westward transportation from the capital.
Following the reopening of additional stations on Line 1 of the Metro, the federal government has made a commitment to expedite the delivery of the Interurban Train. Currently, the service only extends up to Santa Fe, and the Interurban Train is expected to complete the entire route soon.
The Vasco de Quiroga station is a significant development in this regard. This station will primarily benefit the residents of Santa Fe town and will serve as a vital connection point between Vasco de Quiroga and the Observatory. In the segment connecting Vasco de Quiroga to Observatory, a half-kilometer long cable-stayed bridge and a 200-meter clearance have been constructed.
The bridge will protect the nearby ecological reserve from water flow from the Vasco de Quiroga spring and the dam area near Santa Fe and Tacubaya. Progress on the station has been visible, with the main facade nearing completion, and the areas for boarding and disembarking trains, as well as the staircase for entering the station, visible inside.
Despite the lack of a precise timeline for the inauguration of the Interurban Train up to Observatory, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo confirmed during a press conference that the project is on track to be completed by the end of 2025. The completion and testing of the civil work on the Interurban Train and Line 1 of the Metro are targeted for August or September of that year, with both systems operational by December 2025.
When it comes to the Mexico City Metro, it's worth noting that the Prosecutor's Office has recently revealed the discovery of certain substances in the victims of the punctured metro cars. Additionally, new pre-registration dates have been announced for the Housing for the Well-being Edomex program, and free online distance learning opportunities are available at the Universidad Rosario Castellanos.
