International business mail deliveries from Switzerland to the United States resume partially
The Swiss Post, Switzerland's national postal service, has announced that it will resume sending postal consignments to the United States from Monday, following the introduction of a new compliant service that adheres to the latest US customs regulations.
The new service will be available to Swiss businesses, including online retailers, and has been designed to accommodate gifts with a value of up to 100 US dollars, which can be sent since September 4. However, the resumption of service is contingent upon a billing relationship between the sender and the US recipient.
Swiss Post has adapted its IT systems to ensure the necessary data and value flows for the US customs authorities, and has also consulted with international transport partners for the purpose of sending gifts. The organization has implemented additional control mechanisms for sending postal consignments to the USA, and has also adapted its systems to comply with the new "DDP procedure (Delivered Duty Paid)" that requires import duties to be charged to the sender.
The decision to temporarily stop sending postal consignments to the USA on August 25 came in response to the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, which led to a slump in letter and parcel traffic to the USA of more than 80 percent at the beginning of September. This slump has affected 88 postal service providers from all over the world, with many, including Swiss Post, either completely or partially stopping shipping to the USA since the abolition of an exemption for small parcels at the end of August.
Swiss Post does not yet have a legally compliant customs clearance solution for consignments from private individuals and business customers without a billing relationship. The organization is currently trying to find a solution for parcel shipping requests from private individuals and companies without an invoicing relationship to the USA.
The announcement was made by Swiss Post on Thursday. The resumption of service from business customers to the USA marks a significant step towards restoring the flow of postal traffic between Switzerland and the USA.
