INTERPOL Dismantles 16Shop, a Notorious Phishing-as-a-Service Platform
INTERPOL has dismantled 16Shop, a notorious phishing-as-a-service platform that operated since 2017. Indonesian authorities have arrested key figures behind the operation, including Riswanda Noor Saputra, who went by the handle 'Devilscream'. 16Shop, run by Saputra, offered a range of services to facilitate phishing attacks. It localized phishing pages in multiple languages and tailored them based on the victim's location, collecting sensitive data like ID numbers and passport numbers. The platform sold hacking tools that compromised over 70,000 users across 43 countries. To evade detection, 16Shop employed tactics such as bypassing local blacklists and address range blocking. It provided brand-specific phishing kits, domain names, and managed users via an API. Rizky Mauluna Sidik, from Bandung, West Java, Indonesia, is suspected to be 'Rudi' and 'Rizky', another key figure in the operation. In a twist of fate, a recent administrator of 16Shop, using the nicknames 'Rudi' and 'Rizky', accidentally infected their own machine with the Redline information stealer trojan in 2022. The shutdown of 16Shop by INTERPOL has dealt a significant blow to cybercriminals exploiting phishing-as-a-service platforms. Authorities continue to investigate the case, with three suspects apprehended so far. The incident serves as a reminder of the evolving nature of cyber threats and the importance of vigilance in online security.
