Introducing the Compact SUV Yuan Up from BYD in Malaysia
BYD Atto 2 Makes Debut in Malaysia, Breaking Records
The Chinese automaker BYD has made a significant entry into the Malaysian market, introducing the Atto 2, a compact electric SUV that has already made waves in the industry.
The Atto 2, previously known as the Yuan Up, is equipped with a 51.13 kWh BYD Blade Battery, offering a driving range of approximately 350 to 410 km depending on the test cycle (NEDC or WLTP). It supports 7 kW AC charging and up to 82 kW DC fast charging.
Key specifications and features for the Malaysian model include:
- Dimensions: 4,310 mm length, 1,830 mm width, 1,675 mm height, 2,620 mm wheelbase.
- Interior: A 12.8-inch rotatable touchscreen supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a fully digital 8.8-inch instrument cluster, eco-friendly leather seats with ventilation, six airbags, a multifunction steering wheel, wireless charging pad, and a built-in karaoke function.
- Safety: A full active safety suite including a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control with smart follow, intelligent speed limit assist, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, driver fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition, and automatic emergency braking.
- Practicality: 400 liters boot space, expandable to approximately 1,340 liters with rear seats folded.
- Price: Around RM100,000 (on the road, without insurance).
The Atto 2 is available in three exterior colours: Ski White, Harbour Grey, and Breeze Green. It sits between BYD’s Dolphin and Atto 3 models in Malaysia’s lineup and is imported as a complete unit (CBU) from China.
In June 2023, BYD sold 382,585 new energy vehicles (NEVs) worldwide, marking a 11.98 percent increase year-on-year. This figure represents a significant 233.58 percent increase in overseas sales for the same period. The Atto 2 went on sale in Malaysia on July 24, making it the first market globally to receive the right-hand drive version of the Yuan Up.
BYD has established over 40 sales outlets in Malaysia and has been the sales champion for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the country for three consecutive years. The Atto 2's starting prices in Malaysia are significantly higher than those for the Chinese versions, ranging from RMB 96,800 ($13,490) to RMB 119,800.
Despite the higher prices, the Atto 2 offers advanced tech and safety features, competitive pricing near RM100,000, and a longer range due to the larger battery pack compared to the Chinese and European versions. However, the Atto 2 is not currently available in eight variants in Malaysia, as it is only available in the Premium variant.
BYD's chairman anticipates strong overseas sales for the year 2023. With the successful launch of the Atto 2 in Malaysia, it seems that the automaker is well on its way to achieving this goal.
