The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, Nio, has made a significant stride in battery technology with the development of their 150 kWh semi-solid battery pack. This innovation is set to provide an extended driving range, improved safety, and rapid battery swaps, making electric vehicles more accessible and convenient.

Nio's new battery pack boasts an impressive energy density of approximately 360 Wh/kg, enabling an estimated NEDC driving range of around 1,000 km (621 miles) on a single charge. This high capacity is made possible by the use of semi-solid-state technology, which reduces the liquid electrolyte content compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. This change enhances safety by lowering risks of leakage and thermal runaway, while improving battery life and performance.

The 150 kWh semi-solid battery pack also features a cooling system six times stronger than ordinary batteries, ensuring optimal performance even under extreme conditions. It supports fast charging and is designed for integration with Nio's Power Swap Stations, allowing quick battery swaps.

As of now, the semi-solid battery pack is available in Nio's ET5 electric sedan. Customers using the ET5 equipped with the 150 kWh battery have access to the convenience of fast battery swaps at Nio's Power Swap Stations, which have been operational in multiple countries including China, Norway, and Germany since at least 2025.

In addition, Nio has started mass production of the 150 kWh semi-solid battery, and it is expected to become available at their Power Swap Stations in a few months. The battery pack will be available only via subscription.

It's worth noting that the weight of the 150 kWh semi-solid battery pack is 20 kg less than the weight of the Nio's 100-kWh battery pack, and significantly less than the 135.5-kWh LFP battery from BYD, which weighs 903 kg.

The 150 kWh semi-solid battery was designed by WeLion New Energy Technology, a Beijing-based battery maker and Nio's battery cell supplier. This battery pack is a testament to the advancements in battery technology, offering a safer, more efficient, and longer-lasting solution for electric vehicles.

Stay tuned for updates on the official launch date of the 150 kWh semi-solid battery pack, scheduled for the second quarter of this year. For more information, follow Nio on Telegram and keep an eye on news platforms like Google News. The best time for the launch might be during summer, particularly in Xinjiang, a western Chinese province.
