Nio's Firefly EV Set to Make Its European Debut
Nio, the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is expanding its reach beyond China with the introduction of the Firefly EV. This compact hatchback, part of Nio's Firefly sub-brand, is designed for cost-sensitive markets and is set to roll out in various European countries.
The Firefly EV boasts a 42.1 kWh battery that offers a driving range of up to 420 km under Controlled Temperature Charge (CLTC) conditions. The vehicle's e-motor delivers 105 kW (141 hp), enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.2 seconds.
The Firefly EV's design is sleek and modern, featuring distinguishing headlights made of three round units, a blackened roof, retractable door handles, and short bumpers. Inside, the vehicle offers a 13.2-inch floating screen, a 6-inch LCD instrument panel, and a gear shifter behind the wheel. Comfort and safety features include 9 airbags, 14 speakers, a fragrance system, and 256-color ambient lighting.
Nio launched the Firefly EV in China on April 19, 2025. Since then, the company has reported selling 7,843 Firefly EVs from April to June. On June 24, Firefly introduced the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan, slashing the car's starting price by 30% to 79,800 yuan (11,065 USD).
Nio is actively expanding its European footprint through Firefly, aiming to penetrate markets where Nio's premium models may be too expensive. The company is deploying battery swap stations in several European countries, including France, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, and Spain. This infrastructure expansion supports Firefly’s availability in Central and Eastern European countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania.
While exact model-specific pricing for each country and precise availability dates have not been confirmed, the Firefly EV is expected to be priced around $15,000 to $20,400, positioning it in the more affordable segment for electric vehicles internationally. The Firefly EV will start deliveries in Norway and the Netherlands on August 14, with additional European countries including Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, and Romania to follow in 2025 and 2026.
