Jaguar Land Rover Hit by Major Cyberattack, Temporarily Halts Production
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been struck by a substantial cyberattack, leading to the temporary shutdown of its factories and a decline in profits. The company has asked employees to stay home until at least Tuesday. Meanwhile, a cluster of English-speaking cybercriminals has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The cybercriminal group, believed to be a collaboration between Scattered Spider, Lapsus$, and ShinyHunters, has identified itself as 'Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters'. JLR has proactively taken down its systems to mitigate the impact of the attack, which has severely disrupted its global IT systems and operations.
The attack comes as JLR's pre-tax profits dropped by 49% in the second quarter of this year, partially due to U.S. tariffs. The company reported revenues of £28.99 billion ($38.75 billion) last year and employs over 39,000 people worldwide. This is not the first time a British household name has been affected by a cyber incident this year, with Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods also falling victim.
The Information Commissioner's Office has confirmed that JLR reported a data breach incident. However, at this stage, there is no evidence that any customer data has been stolen. The National Crime Agency has arrested four individuals in connection with earlier retail sector ransomware attacks, suggesting a potential link.
Jaguar Land Rover is working to resolve the cyberattack and restore its systems. The company has asked factory workers to stay at home until at least Tuesday. While there is no evidence of customer data theft, the incident serves as a reminder of the increasing threat of cybercrime to businesses. The investigation continues, with the National Crime Agency involved in related arrests.
