KFC restaurant operator in Denmark facing financial insolvency
In a shocking turn of events, all KFC restaurants in Denmark have been temporarily closed due to a food hygiene scandal and the subsequent bankruptcy of the local operator, Isken Aps.
The food safety issues were exposed in a documentary by broadcaster DR in June. Inspections by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration on June 2 revealed serious breaches of food hygiene rules in all 11 KFC branches across Denmark. None of the restaurants received a "Happy" rating; four were rated "Unhappy" (indicating serious issues), and seven were "Irritated" (meaning some issues) with fines and possible closures imposed until problems were resolved.
The combination of these severe food safety problems and the bankruptcy filing of Isken Aps on July 18, 2025, suggests that the KFC chain in Denmark is currently facing significant operational and legal challenges, likely impacting their ability to remain open or maintain normal service.
Isken Aps, the operator of KFC restaurants in Denmark, was unable to pay its staff before filing for bankruptcy. The West European head office of KFC has since announced that it is breaking off its agreement with Isken ApS and will find a new company to take over the franchise in Denmark.
KFC, founded over 70 years ago in the city of Louisville, now has more than 30,000 outlets in 145 different countries. Its restaurants in Denmark are located in Rødovre, Greve, Tilst, Horsens, Vejle, Herning, two in Odense, and three in Copenhagen.
As of now, no information is available about any takeover, restructuring, or reopening plans since the bankruptcy filing. The future of KFC's restaurants in Denmark remains uncertain.
