After a devastating fire in early July 2025 that destroyed the fish market Krauß in Schrecksbach, the market is making a swift comeback. Despite the millions of euros worth of damage, the market has resumed operations on weekly markets and plans to reopen its permanent facility in the spring of 2026.
Since the end of July 2025, the mobile sales units have returned to the weekly markets, including those in Fulda and Lauterbach. Another mobile sales unit is set to join the fleet soon to ensure all markets are covered.
The market's permanent facility on the Schrecksbach premises is scheduled for a spring 2026 reopening. A mobile sales stand on the premises is also planned to maintain local sales during the rebuilding process.
Remarkably, all 30 employees of the fish market Krauß have been retained, ensuring continuity in the workforce. While some employees may take days off during the rebuilding process, no one is being sent home.
Owner Karsten Krauß expects a new hall to be built once all necessary permits are in place. The demolition work on the current site is currently underway and is expected to take four to six weeks.
Weekly markets within a 100 km radius from Kassel, Fulda, and Hanau have been running for about three weeks in a smaller, scaled-down version. This allows the fish market Krauß to serve customers with fresh fish again, and also provides work for the sales team during the rebuilding process.
