In a significant move towards welfare and social security, the Bihar government, under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has increased the monthly social security pension from ₹400 to ₹1,100, benefiting approximately 1.12 crore pensioners. This increase was announced in June 2025 and the first installment of the enhanced pension was credited in July 2025, totaling around ₹1,247 crore distributed across six pension schemes.

The six schemes that have been impacted by this increase are the Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Pension Yojana, Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension, Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension, Laxmi Bai Social Security Pension, and Bihar State Disability Pension.

For Jayaprakash (JP) Movement fighters (JP Senanis), the Bihar government has doubled their pension. Imprisoned JP Senanis now receive ₹30,000 per month (previously ₹15,000) for those imprisoned over six months, and ₹15,000 for those jailed up to six months (previously ₹7,500). This pension also extends to the surviving spouse after the pensioner's death.

The Bihar government's social welfare initiatives have been well-received. In his statement, Prashant Kishor, the leader of the Jan Suraj Party, assured that "Nobody should be left out of the benefits." Nitish Kumar echoed this sentiment, stating that "Nobody should be left out of the benefits."

In the run-up to elections, opposition parties have made bigger pension promises. The RJD, for instance, has promised Rs 1,500 per month, plus Rs 2,500 under its Mai-Bahin Maan Yojana. However, specific data comparing Nitish Kumar's promises and opposition proposals on pension hikes is not readily available.

The state's overall supplementary budget for 2025-26 is Rs 57,946 crore, passed after the original budget of Rs 3,16,989.5 crore in March. The Social Welfare Department received an additional Rs 10,169 crore in the first supplementary budget for 2025-26, bringing its total budget to Rs 18,837 crore.

The first payment under the increased pension was made on July 11. To ensure smooth implementation and address any queries or complaints, a toll-free helpline (18003456262) has been established for beneficiaries. The Bihar government aims to link all six schemes to the Right to Public Service (RTPS) at the panchayat level, allowing people to apply for and get help without having to go to block offices.
