Large-Scale Solar Venture: Box Canyon Solar (300MW), Arizona

The Box Canyon Solar Project, a significant milestone in the competitive process that began in December 2020, has officially started commercial operations. Developed by BrightNight, Cordelio Power, and the Southwest Public Power Agency (SPPA), the 300-megawatt solar project is the first facility in both the aforementioned portfolio and BrightNight and Cordelio Power's Arizona portfolio to become operational.

Located in Pinal County, Arizona, about six miles north of the Town of Florence, the project's design has been optimized using BrightNight's patented artificial intelligence-based platform. The Box Canyon Solar Project is expected to generate electricity sufficient to power 77,000 Arizona homes and businesses annually.

The groundbreaking for the Box Canyon Solar Project was announced by BrightNight in November 2023, and was attended by BrightNight CEO Martin Hermann, SPPA President of the Board Ken Robbins, and Pinal County authorities. The project will create 300 American jobs during its construction and is expected to have a $47 million economic effect in Pinal County during construction.

Governor Katie Hobbs of Arizona has emphasized her administration's commitment to realizing Arizona's solar energy potential, with the Box Canyon Solar Project being the largest renewable energy procurement in SPPA's history. The project's operation marks a step forward in Arizona's journey towards becoming an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.

BrightNight is also involved in the development of the Starfire Solar Project, which, upon completion, will be Kentucky's largest solar development. The project, currently in the pre-construction phase, is anticipated to create approximately 250 to 300 direct construction jobs and provide steady revenue to local schools and governments through payments in lieu of taxes agreements.

The Box Canyon Solar Project is not associated with Enertis Applus+, who were selected as Technical Advisor for a separate development. The project's successful operation serves as a testament to the partnership between BrightNight, Cordelio Power, and SPPA, and their commitment to renewable energy development.

  1. The Box Canyon Solar Project's design, optimized using BrightNight's patented AI-based platform, demonstrates a strong interweaving of science and technology with the construction industry.
  2. In alignment with Governor Katie Hobbs' administration, the Box Canyon Solar Project's operation marks a significant contribution to Arizona's environmental-science goals, as it paves the way towards a greener energy industry in the state.
  3. Financing for renewable energy projects, such as the Starfire Solar Project and the Box Canyon Solar Project, can generate steady revenue for local schools and governments through mechanisms like payments in lieu of taxes agreements, ensuring a positive economic impact within the community.
