In the small town of Hirschaid, Bamberg, a significant incident has disrupted rail traffic on a crucial north-south corridor in Germany. Last Friday morning, a fire broke out under the pedestrian underpass beneath the Nuremberg-Bamberg railway line, causing severe damage to the structure.

The blaze, involving wooden pallets and planks, was reported by a witness and promptly extinguished by approximately 20 firefighters. Local authorities, including the Bamberger Kriminalpolizei, are actively investigating the incident, with suspicions of arson.

The fire has left the railway line between Nürnberg and Bamberg unsafe for train operations. As a result, this section of the rail has been partially closed, and repair plans are currently underway. The Berlin-Munich rail route between Bamberg and Forchheim (Oberfranken) is completely closed until at least Thursday, July 10, 2025.

This disruption has significant implications for rail traffic. ICE trains between Berlin and Munich are experiencing severe delays and rerouting, extending journey times by approximately 90 minutes. Some stops, such as Erlangen and Bamberg, are omitted during this period. Regional trains between Nuremberg and Bamberg have been suspended, and the S1 train towards Nuremberg terminates at Forchheim (Oberfranken).

Deutsche Bahn has arranged replacement bus services between Forchheim and Bamberg, although these do not stop at some intermediate stations due to roadworks; taxis are provided as alternatives at these stations. Passengers on regional transport between Nuremberg and Bamberg are advised to reroute via Würzburg using specified regional train lines as an alternative.

Additional cancellations affect certain IC services between Leipzig and Nuremberg via Jena, and services between Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe and Gera. High-speed trains in both directions between Nuremberg and Erfurt will be rerouted due to the closure, with journeys delayed by another half hour due to the rerouting via Weimar and Naumburg.

The high-speed route between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle is also closed until July 12, and the high-speed route between Munich and Berlin will be closed between Erfurt and Leipzig/Halle for bridge renovation work. Deutsche Bahn is planning to install temporary bridges to resume train traffic as soon as possible.

The fire caused significant damage to the underpass structure, making it impossible for trains to pass above it. However, the bridge renovation work is not related to the fire under the railway track in Hirschaid. The Bamberg Criminal Police is investigating suspicions of arson regarding the fire, but as of now, there are no indications that the fire was set with the intention of disrupting the ICE route.

This incident at Hirschaid has become a major disruption point affecting both regional and long-distance rail traffic on a crucial north-south corridor in Germany. Passengers are advised to check Deutsche Bahn's website for the latest updates and to plan their journeys accordingly.
