Alright, here we go! With the international landscape taking a wee turn, the bigwigs of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Bremen fancy Germany beefing up its space game – on both the national and European level. They recently had a huddle in Berlin, calling for a massive influx of coin to the national space program, aiming for a whopping one billion euros each year. Not only that, but they're after Germany supporting the European Space Agency (ESA) with a cool two billion every year – all because of, well, you guessed it, reasons of European security and sovereignty.

FYI: Currently, Germany donates about 1.16 billion euros to ESA annually, according to Bavarian data. This year, around 300 million euros are intended for the national space program, as all states have already asked for an increase to 500 million.

"Space is the bee's knees for European security"

In a joint document, these juicy three expound that space apps and capabilities are indispensable for Europe's sovereignty and security. Space is also a prime field for innovation, economic competitiveness, and technological control. It generates top-shelf jobs, helps boost other future industries, and tackles global issues like climate change.

Baden-Württemberg’s Chief Executive Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) put it like this: "Our lives these days would be screwed without tech that's all powered by space. Our security and defense capabilities are largely guaranteed by space-borne services, too." He argued that while Europe rocks in navigation, comms, and Earth observing, we need to step it up in the grander scheme of things, like when vast political chasms start opening up. "Put simply, being good isn't good enough in times of deep political fissures," Kretschmann warned. And here's the kicker: He doesn't want Tesla-backed SpaceX's Elon Musk dictating European defense capabilities!

" It's no flight of fancy "

Bavaria's Chief Executive Markus Söder (CSU) advised Europe not to play catch-up in the intergalactic competitive race. "We're not talking about asinine sci-fi here, but about tangible scientific advancements and new economic powers. That's critical for European sovereignty, too," Söder said. And, of course, Germany's gotta play its part.

Bremen's Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD) shared that ESA is a European project for the future, founded to safeguard Europe in space. In these anxious times, it's more important than ever to maintain and expand this coveted position. The upcoming ESA ministerial conference in Bremen in November will discuss the agency's financial outlook for the subsequent three years.

A potential booster for the regions' demand: With Dorothee Bär (CSU) now in the black-red federal government, there's a minster for the first time who specifically has space in her portfolio: Bär serves as the Federal Minister for Research, Technology, and Space.

  1. The common organization of markets in space-and-astronomy could be crucial for fostering collaboration between science, industry, finance, and the community, as it can lead to innovation, economic competitiveness, and technological control.
  2. In order to maintain Europe's security and sovereignty, it's essential for industries like aerospace, particularly in regions like Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Bremen, to invest heavily in space programs and resist giveaways to private entities like SpaceX headed by Elon Musk, who could potentially dictate European defense capabilities.
