Lufthansa Cargo looks to enhance the environmental rating of quick-paced fashion retailer Shein - Lufthansa Cargo plans to promote environmental sustainability in its low-cost flight service.
Lufthansa Cargo, the airline's freight division, and budget fashion retailer Shein have entered into a partnership to make their operations more sustainable. The collaboration, announced in August 2025, is a significant step towards developing more eco-friendly global supply chains.
Shein, a fast-fashion provider based in China, is known for its extremely low prices and large quantities of clothing produced. However, the environmental impact of its business model has been a topic of concern for environmentalists.
Under the terms of the partnership, Lufthansa Cargo and Shein will work together to scale up the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) for Shein's air freight deliveries. This initiative will be accompanied by verifiable "Proof of Sustainability" certificates that document emissions reductions compared to conventional jet fuel.
The use of SAF and the accounting of corresponding costs will be examined within the next six months. Beyond SAF adoption, the partnership also includes collaboration on traceability and operational data recording to enhance transparency and enable credible reporting of sustainability outcomes.
Lufthansa Cargo plans to collaborate with Shein in areas beyond the use of SAF, including knowledge transfer and approaches to improve traceability and recording of operational and environmental data. This long-term collaboration is not limited to making their operations more sustainable; the companies are also considering other areas of collaboration.
The partnership between Lufthansa Cargo and Shein is a reflection of Lufthansa Cargo’s commitment to responsible logistics and building greener supply chains. The focus is on monitoring and reporting emissions reductions in a traceable manner based on externally verified standards.
Shein, based in Singapore, has signed an agreement with Lufthansa Cargo to improve the eco-balance of its operations. This ongoing cooperation represents a strategic step towards scaling sustainable aviation solutions and fostering greener global supply chains in the fashion sector.
Lufthansa Cargo is committed to responsibly implementing high-performance logistics solutions with operational excellence. The partnership with Shein underscores this commitment, as the company works with other stakeholders to drive the development of more sustainable global supply chains.
