Lufthansa Reviews Regional Flights in Saxony Amidst Staff Layoffs
Lufthansa is reviewing connections at smaller German airports, including Dresden and Leipzig/Halle, due to high aviation fees. This has raised concerns among business and research leaders in Saxony, who fear potential harm to trade fairs, connections, and research. Meanwhile, 130 ground staff employees at these airports have been laid off.
The summer flight schedule 2026, set to begin in late March, is currently being planned. However, no specific flight routes at Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports have been confirmed for cancellation or change. The final schedule is typically published a few weeks to a couple of months before its start, often in February or early March 2026.
Saxony's Minister of Economics, leading eight signatories, has demanded the maintenance of existing connections at these airports. Dr. Fabian Magerl, CEO of IHK Leipzig, has called for reduced taxes and charges for air traffic to maintain competitiveness. The specific flight reductions will be announced by the end of October or beginning of November 2025.
The potential reduction of flight routes in Saxony has sparked concern among local business and research leaders. Lufthansa's review of connections at smaller airports, including Dresden and Leipzig/Halle, is ongoing. The impact on trade fairs, connections, and research in the region remains to be seen.
