Luxury Hawaii Development Sparks $240M Legal Battle Involving Shohei Ohtani
A legal dispute has unfolded on Hawaii's Hapuna Coast, involving a luxury housing development worth $240 million. The lawsuit, filed on Aug. 8, 2023, targets Shohei Ohtani, his agent Nez Balelo, and their agency CAA. The plaintiffs, a real estate investor, broker, and related entities, allege wrongdoing over their removal from the project management.
The plaintiffs claim they were ousted from the deal by Kingsbarn Realty Capital, the majority owner. They accuse Ohtani and Balelo of abuse of power, interference, and unjust enrichment. The lawsuit centres around a luxury development on the Big Island's Hapuna Coast, with a projected cost of $240 million.
Ohtani's lawyers have fought back, filing a motion to dismiss the lawsuit on Sept. 14, 2023. They argue that the plaintiffs improperly used Ohtani's name and photograph for their project's promotion. The plaintiffs, however, deny this, stating they kept Balelo and CAA informed about the website in question. An amended complaint has also added CAA Sports as a defendant.
The lawsuit, now in Hawaii Circuit Court, remains ongoing. The plaintiffs seek unspecified damages and a share of the project's profits. Ohtani's legal team maintains their client's innocence, with the next step in the case yet to be determined.
