Lyon Airport First in France to Hit 10M Passengers, Achieves Net Zero Emissions
Lyon Airport (LYS) has made history as the first French airport to serve over 10 million passengers annually and achieve net zero emissions. This significant milestone was reached in May 2025, a year ahead of schedule.
VINCI Airports, the operator of LYS, implemented several sustainable initiatives to accomplish this feat. These include harnessing solar energy, installing LED lighting, transitioning to green energy and biogas, recovering heat, electrifying the fleet, and replacing air conditioning systems. The combined effect of these measures led to a remarkable 94% reduction in direct CO2 emissions (scopes 1 and 2) since 2013.
Notably, VINCI Airports has 60 airports accredited to the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program, with five of these airports, including LYS, reaching the maximum ACA 5 level. Meanwhile, the next French airport serving over 10 million passengers annually after LYS is Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, which handled around 14.75 million passengers in 2024.
LYS's achievement demonstrates VINCI Airports' commitment to sustainability and sets a new standard for airports worldwide. The successful implementation of these green initiatives not only benefits the environment but also ensures a sustainable future for the airport and its passengers.
