Scuttlebutt: The SB 53 Express Bus Line, a Lifeline Connector for Neuss Residents, Steadily Gains Traction
The city council of Neuss, in a recent roundtable, gave the green light to integrate the SB 53 express bus line into the city's standard transport schedule. This decision cements the SB 53 as a permanent fixture in the urban transportation landscape, sticking to its current timetable.
The SB 53's journey embarks from the heart of Neuss at Moselstraße and meanders through Reuschenberg, Weckhoven, Hoisten, Rosellen, Allerheiligen, Uedesheim, and eventually ends in Düsseldorf at the Südpark near the university. This route is a vital artery for the folks dwelling in southern Neuss, providing an efficient means to commute not only to Düsseldorf but also to the northern districts of Neuss.
First launched as a trial project in August 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 outbreak's initial wave, the SB 53's usage was initially modest. However, as summer rolled around in 2021, the line began to pick up steam, leading to the extension of the trial operation. A passenger survey in June 2023 revealed an even more substantial increase in demand. While an average of 653 passengers used the SB 53 on a typical weekday in June 2021, this figure rose to 850 in the summer of the same year, marking a 30% uptick from the previous two years.
Encouraged by the favorable passenger response, the administrations of Düsseldorf and Neuss cities, along with Rheinbahn and Stadtwerke Neuss, have made it their collective mission to solidify the SB 53 as a reliable service. They will continue to monitor the line's performance and, if needed, fine-tune adjustments in coordination with Düsseldorf's public transport plan or the planned bus network study in Neuss.
However, the ultimate decision lies with Düsseldorf's Ordnungs- und Verkehrsausschuss, slated for a gathering on October 18, 2023. Any proposed alterations to the SB 53 will be discussed during the line's approval process with the regional government.
