Major Scrapyard Fire in Werl Prompts Environmental Inspection
A major blaze at a scrapyard in Werl on Saturday, October 5, 2025, has prompted an environmental inspection. The fire sent a large plume of smoke into the air, leading to precautionary measures by local authorities.
The fire, which started in a massive pile of scrap, was tackled by three water jets and around 80 firefighters. An employee of the scrapyard assisted using an excavator to spread out the burning material, aiding in extinguishing the flames. The fire department issued a warning via the NINA app, advising residents to keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation. As a precaution, a nearby house was evacuated due to the strong odor.
The fire threatened to spread to an adjacent house and storage hall but was prevented by the swift response of the firefighters. Investigations into the cause of the fire will commence on Monday, led by the police.
Following the incident, the Environmental Protection Agency of the Soest district will inspect the industrial area on the morning of October 6, 2025, to check for possible environmental damages. The city and the Soest district may need to dig out a contaminated area as a result of the fire.
