Manufacturing at Northvolt's primary facility will come to a temporary standstill. - Manufacturing at Northvolt's primary facility has been entirely halted.
Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has announced a complete halt in production at its flagship plant in Skellefteå, Sweden, with operations expected to wind down and cease by June 30. This decision follows ongoing insolvency proceedings in Sweden, as efforts to secure a buyer for the cell production operations have proven unsuccessful.
Recently, the plant had been operating at a limited capacity, with Scania as the sole remaining customer. However, Scania has ended its business relationship with Northvolt, citing economic reasons and the increasing expense of battery cells during the bankruptcy process.
Approximately 900 employees will lose their jobs as a result of this decision. The search for a buyer continues, but there are currently no strong prospects for a near-term takeover of the cell production operations.
Northvolt's new battery factory in Heide, Germany, is still functioning despite the company-wide turbulence. The German entities remain legally independent from the Swedish operations, and any restructuring refers to preventive measures allowed under German law (StaRUG process), not formal insolvency. Financing for the German project, including a convertible bond from the state-owned KfW bank, is currently under review by the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein.
The future of the Heide plant remains uncertain, but ongoing restructuring efforts aim to safeguard its continuation. Northvolt has already sold other business areas, including a plant in the Polish city of Gdańsk, which is being taken over by Scania. There are also interested parties and potential buyers for other parts of the corporate group.

The community may rally to provide aid to the affected 900 Northvolt employees, seeking alternative employment opportunities or offering temporary support during this transitional period. With the cessation of production, Northvolt might consider broadening its horizon in the industry, exploring new financial avenues for energy-focused ventures, such as vocational training programs in the realm of battery manufacturing.
