Massachusetts Authorities Grant Fanatics Sportsbook Permit for Operational Activities

Fanatics Sportsbook, the rapidly growing sports betting operator, has made significant strides in its U.S. expansion. The company has secured a license to operate in Massachusetts, marking its entry into the 15th state, and has completed the acquisition of PointsBet's U.S. assets [2][3][4].

The acquisition, finalised in 2023 and officially launched under the Fanatics brand in August, has given Fanatics Sportsbook immediate market access in key states such as New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, and Tennessee [2][3][4]. These states were already part of PointsBet's existing operations, allowing Fanatics to bypass the lengthy process of starting from scratch in these regulated markets.

In Massachusetts, Fanatics Sportsbook plans to launch its operations by the end of May [6]. The state's April sports betting handle of $579.3 million places it third for the month, behind only New York and New Jersey [7]. Notably, Boston-based DraftKings accounted for more than 50% of the total state handle in April [8].

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) approved changes to House Rules for both Betr and FanDuel, paving the way for Fanatics Sportsbook's entry into the state [9]. The MGC's vote on Fanatics Sportsbook was the quickest of a six-hour meeting [10].

The deal between Fanatics Sportsbook and PointsBet was announced on Sunday night [5]. The acquisition has enabled Fanatics to leverage PointsBet's infrastructure and licenses, rapidly expanding its retail and online sportsbook operations [3][4]. The company has already opened its first retail location in Maryland in January [6].

Meanwhile, FanDuel has requested language changes relating to evolving rules by sports governing bodies [1]. Fanatics Sportsbook is currently live to a limited number of customers in Ohio and Tennessee [6].

The acquisition of PointsBet's U.S. assets has effectively enabled Fanatics Sportsbook to operate seamlessly in major regulated U.S. states, providing immediate market presence and operational licenses inherited from PointsBet [2][3][4].
