Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Extends Rent Control in Rostock and Greifswald Until 2028
The state government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has extended rent control in the university cities of Rostock and Greifswald until 2028. This move aims to ease the tense housing market in both cities, where tenants have been actively utilising the rent control measures.
Previously, rent control limited increases to no more than ten percent above the local comparative rent. This regulation will continue to apply, providing tenants with some respite from soaring rental prices. The extension aligns with the federal law and is set to expire on September 30, 2028.
Exceptions to the rent control still apply for new buildings or comprehensively modernized apartments. However, the state government has decided to maintain the rent control for existing properties, acknowledging the ongoing housing market pressures in these university cities. The decision was made through association consultation, involving various stakeholders.
The extended rent control in Rostock and Greifswald offers tenants continued protection against excessive rent increases. The state government's decision reflects its commitment to addressing the tense housing market situation in these university cities.
