In the lead-up to the local elections scheduled for October 12, Ana Mendes Godinho, a prominent political figure, has unveiled a comprehensive plan for the development of Sintra, Portugal's picturesque municipality. The plan focuses on childcare, public transportation, housing, and healthcare, aiming to address the needs of the community and enhance its quality of life.

Mendes Godinho, a former Minister of Labor, Solidarity, and Social Security, has pledged to expand and improve the network of creches, creating an additional 6,000 free places. Recognising Sintra's centrality in the metropolitan area, she plans to guarantee connections between the municipalities of Sintra, Cascais, Oeiras, and Odivelas by BRT buses.

In a bid to support healthcare professionals, Mendes Godinho has promised to provide 200 housing units for doctors and nurses working at the new hospital and health centres in Sintra. The construction of the new Sintra Hospital, led by Basílio Horta, is set to open soon.

The housing sector is another key area of focus for Mendes Godinho. She intends to approve a program aimed at landlords who want to rent houses at affordable costs, with the Chamber assuming the risk and supporting necessary works to bring houses back into use and life. With this initiative, Mendes Godinho aims to place 10,000 homes on the market at affordable prices and rents by 2030.

Mendes Godinho's mobility plan includes identifying the Sintra line functioning like a metro line with regular and predictable trains every 10 minutes. She has also reaffirmed her commitment to abolish tolls on the A16 highway for residents, workers, and businesses in the municipality.

The social-democratic coalition of Ricardo Baptista Leite secured four elected officials in the Sintra Municipal Chamber, while the PS, led by Basílio Horta, won five mandates in 2021. Notable candidates for the local elections include Marco Almeida, Maurício Rodrigues, Rita Matias, and Pedro Ventura, who was elected from the CDU (PCP/PEV).

Nuno Afonso, initially elected from Chega, later became an independent in the Sintra Municipal Chamber. Mendes Godinho made these commitments in the presence of the Secretary-General of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, and the co-spokesperson of Livre, Rui Tavares.
