Metro in Los Angeles to commence A Line Extension to Pomona on September 19th
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro) has announced that the long-awaited A Line Extension to Pomona has reached substantial completion on January 3, 2025. The extension, which began construction in 2020, is scheduled to open for passengers on September 19, 2025.
This $1.5 billion, nine-mile extension will add 9.1 miles of track and four new stations at Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, and Pomona. The extension is part of L.A. Metro's Twenty-Eight by '28 initiative, a plan to complete nine major projects by the year 2028, including the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The A Line Extension project is aimed at enhancing the region's transit infrastructure, providing easier access to recreation centres like the Los Angeles County Fairplex, regional parks, museums, and historic downtowns. It will also improve access to educational institutions such as Cal Poly Pomona, University of La Verne, Mt. San Antonio College, and Pomona College.
One of the key benefits of the extension is the new, faster way it will offer for residents of the Inland Empire and Foothill Cities corridor to travel between their cities and Greater Los Angeles. The Pomona Station, in particular, will serve as a significant transit hub, allowing riders to transfer between L.A. Metro and Metrolink services.
Each station on the A Line Extension will be equipped with bike lockers, electric vehicle chargers, vehicle drop-offs, and park-and-ride facilities, making it easy for passengers to travel sustainably. The extension will also connect the people of San Gabriel Valley cities with Greater Los Angeles and beyond.
The Foothill Gold Line Construction Authority led the construction of the A Line Extension project, and L.A. Metro is responsible for its completion. The extension is on track to open on Sept. 19, offering a much-needed boost to the region's transit system and making travel throughout Southern California more convenient and accessible than ever before.
