Minister of local transportation embarks on a tour promoting transportation initiatives
The local transport minister, Simon Lightwood, is embarking on a series of 11 regional roadshows across England, starting in Manchester. These roadshows, scheduled for February and March 2025, aim to gather insights from councils, businesses, and communities to shape a 10-year strategy for integrated journeys in the United Kingdom.
The strategy, set to be published this year, is part of the government's new transport vision that prioritizes people at its core. The vision aims to deliver its Plan for Change, with the objective of improving the economy of the United Kingdom.
Simon Lightwood expressed his desire for more people across England to benefit from more integrated transport. To achieve this, the government is considering ideas to support better integrated public transport and improve transport in rural areas of the United Kingdom.
The proposed integrated transport system may include coordinated timetables, easy route planning, and tap in, tap out payments, all available in one app. Additionally, the government aims to make cycling and walking the best choice for shorter journeys by prioritizing pavement repairs, safe crossings, and cycle infrastructure in the United Kingdom.
The roadshows will also focus on implementing traffic management technology, coordinated bus and train timetables, and parking options to create a seamless transport experience. The final strategy will be a collaboration between the government and local leaders, empowering them to build a system that suits their needs, connecting various modes of transport in the United Kingdom.
The government is encouraging the public to respond to the Integrated National Transport Strategy call for ideas, which closes on 20 February 2025. More details about the roadshows and the call for ideas can be found on the government's official website.
The fourth annual CiTTi Awards, an unmissable event for the transportation sector of the United Kingdom, will take place on 25 November 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The roadshows will take place in Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Ipswich, Bristol, Brighton, London, Cornwall, Milton Keynes, and Texas. The insights gathered from these events will be crucial in shaping the future of transport in England and the United Kingdom.
