Multiple inadequacies in the realm of cleaning services
In a recent series of inspections, the Customs Financial Control Schwarzarbeit (FKS) in North Rhine-Westphalia focused on ensuring compliance with employment standards across various sectors. The announcements were made by the Ministry of Labour and the General Customs Directorate in Düsseldorf.
During the action days, the FKS inspected work permits and residence titles, as well as delved into the areas of hazardous and biological substances, risk assessment, and social security registration. A total of 851 workplace safety violations were identified, with 55 administrative offense proceedings initiated.
Missing protective goggles or gloves, improper or inappropriate storage of cleaning agents, and underreporting to social security were among the most common violations. Larger companies showed fewer violations than those with fewer employees, but a concerning number of businesses were found non-compliant, especially in the building cleaning industry.
In fact, more than 80% of building cleaning businesses inspected for unregistered labor, illegal employment, and workplace safety violations were found non-compliant. As a result, 20 criminal proceedings were initiated by the public prosecutor's office in North Rhine-Westphalia for suspected evasion of social security contributions or illegal residence.
The inspections also aimed to address issues related to fraudulent social security benefits claims. Some businesses were fined immediately for not adhering to workplace safety regulations or for inadequately storing large quantities of hazardous materials.
The importance of protecting building cleaning employees from work-related illnesses due to their strenuous physical work and frequent chemical exposure was highlighted by NRW Minister of Labour Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU). The annual action days aim to ensure that employment standards are met across different sectors, with the goal of maintaining a safe and fair work environment for all.
At present, 116 cases are still under investigation by the FKS. The annual action days will continue in the future, with the aim of ensuring that businesses in North Rhine-Westphalia adhere to employment standards and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for their employees.
