Nature Friends Celebrate 50 Years in Scheidegg with Nest Box Clean-Up

In Scheidegg, members of the local Nature Friends (NFS) are currently inspecting nest boxes as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. The group is inviting interested parties to join them in a clean-up event while documenting the occupancy and contents of the boxes.

The NFS, led by long-standing member Georg Brinz, are checking 260 nest boxes scattered across the Scheidegger Waterfalls area, Waldlehrpfad at Hagspiel, and the Kurpark. Participants are searching for numbered boxes and examining each one to see if it contains a nest.

This year, the occupancy rate stands at around 43%, slightly lower than previous years' rates of 50% and 56%. Despite this, the group has discovered various types of nests, including delicate finch nests and abandoned wasp nests. Notably, signs of seven-sleepers, nocturnal rodents similar to squirrels, were found in 37 of the boxes.

The NFS are encouraging more people to engage with their work as they celebrate their anniversary. By documenting the contents of the nest boxes, the group aims to record breeding success at different locations in Scheidegg. The lower occupancy rate this year serves as a reminder of the importance of their conservation efforts.
