New York Invests $25M in Farm Water Conservation Projects
New York is investing $25 million in farm water conservation projects across the state. This significant funding reflects the growing alignment between farm policy and climate resilience, as highlighted by Governor Kathy Hochul. It's the largest single round of funding in the history of the Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution Abatement and Control Program, which has awarded over $250 million to projects since its creation 30 years ago.
The funding will support 50 projects across 25 counties. These projects range from a 1.4 million-gallon nutrient storage system at Van Patten Farms to regional conservation initiatives. The program supports best management practices under the Agricultural Environmental Management framework, with local soil and water committees serving as intermediaries. County-level projects include large dairy and crop operations in Wyoming, Delaware, and Onondaga, which received some of the largest awards.
Governor Kathy Hochul stated that the funding will help farmers protect waterways and communities from climate change. The funding combines the Environmental Protection Fund ($14 million) and the 2022 Environmental Bond Act ($11 million). The responsible politicians in New York who approved the $25 million spending include Governor Kathy Hochul and relevant state legislators involved in the budget or environmental committees.
The $25 million investment in farm water conservation projects across New York is expected to support 50 projects, benefiting 25 counties. This funding, the largest in the program's history, will help farmers implement best management practices, protect waterways, and enhance climate resilience. The funding combines two key state funds and reflects the commitment of Governor Kathy Hochul and the state legislature to environmental conservation.
