Nigeria's Rail Transport Booms in Q1 2025 with Cargo, Passenger Surge
Nigeria's rail transport sector has witnessed a significant boost in Q1 2025, with a notable increase in cargo volume and passenger traffic, leading to a substantial rise in revenue.
The volume of goods and cargo transported by rail in Nigeria surged to 181,520 tons in Q1 2025, marking a 13.57% increase from the 160,650 tons recorded in the same period last year. This growth has translated into a significant rise in revenue from goods and cargo transport, which reached N657.03 million in Q1 2025, up by 8.19% from N607.32 million in Q1 2024.
The positive trend extends to passenger traffic, with a 37.6% increase to 929,553 passengers in Q1 2025, compared to 675,293 in Q1 2024. This has led to a substantial increase in revenue from passenger services, which amounted to N1.95 billion in Q1 2025, a 37.36% increase from N1.42 billion in Q1 2024. Other income receipts in the sector also saw a remarkable surge, jumping by 355.39% to N115.68 million in Q1 2025, from N25.40 million in Q1 2024.
The impressive growth in Nigeria's rail transport sector, as evidenced by the increased cargo volume, passenger traffic, and revenue, underscores the sector's potential and the success of recent modernization efforts. Despite the lack of information on the specific individual coordinating these efforts, the results speak for themselves, pointing to a brighter future for Nigeria's rail transport.
