Nigeria's VP Reassures Dangote, Suspends Refinery Strike
Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has reassured investors like Aliko Dangote, describing the Dangote Petroleum Refinery as a strategic asset. The government has intervened in disputes between the refinery and labor unions, leading to a temporary suspension of strikes.
The Dangote Refinery, since its 2023 commissioning, has faced recurring disputes with oil sector unions, including PENGASSAN. The Federal Government has directed the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) to resolve these issues. Vice President Shettima cautioned PENGASSAN against disrupting operations, urging both labor unions and the private sector to exercise caution and patriotism.
Shettima praised Dangote's $10 billion investment in Nigeria's economy, noting that the refinery could have been built abroad. He described Dangote as 'not just an individual but an institution'. The government, through its labor ministry, has intervened and expects far-reaching recommendations to prevent future industrial actions. PENGASSAN has suspended its nationwide strike temporarily but warned of resumed action if commitments are not met.
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery remains a crucial asset for Nigeria's economic recovery. The government's intervention has temporarily eased tensions, but both parties must work together to ensure long-term stability and growth.
