Portugal Endures Third Day of Train Service Disruptions Due to National Rail Strike

The ongoing national strike by CP workers, supported by 14 unions, is the cause of Portugal's third consecutive day of train service disruptions. This strike, which began on May 7 and will extend until May 14, has prompted a complete shutdown of train services nationwide due to full-union action.

The industrial action is predominantly driven by demands for improved wages that offset the increasing cost of living. The unions contend that recent wage increases do not restore workers' purchasing power and seek decent and fair salary increases through collective negotiation. Additionally, they advocate for the implementation of the salary scale restructuring agreement, as previously negotiated and agreed upon.

Furthermore, partial strikes by ticket inspectors and ticket office workers have compounded the cancellations. For instance, a partial strike on May 12 led to the cancellation of 175 out of 249 scheduled trains, with full participation by the strikers involved.

The National Union of Railway Drivers (SMAQ), the only union participating in the current strike, joined on May 6. Other unions, such as the Machinists' Union (SMAQ), the Commercial Itinerant Railway Review Union (SFRCI), and Metro and Railway Workers Union (STMEFE), have called for partial strikes with varying durations.

The disruptions have significantly impacted train services across Portugal, resulting in widespread cancellations and service stoppages. As the strike enters its fourth day, commuters continue to face challenges and disruptions to their travel plans.

The ongoing national strike by CP workers, supported by 14 unions, which includes SMAQ, is not only disrupting train services but also impacts the industry, as the disruptions are a strain on the transportation sector. Further complications arise from partial strikes by ticket inspectors, ticket office workers, and other unions like SMAQ, SFRCI, and STMEFE, as these actions also affect the finance sector, since many commuters rely on the train services for their daily commute and may face financial difficulties due to the disruptions.
