Nordstrom intends to expand its Nordstrom Rack division while its main-line stores face a contraction in scale.
Nordstrom Rack Expands Presence with 23 New Stores in 2024
In a bid to strengthen its retail footprint, Nordstrom Rack, the off-price retail arm of the Nordstrom brand, has announced plans to open 23 new stores across the United States in 2024. This expansion follows the successful opening of 23 stores in 2023, marking a significant growth for the company.
The company currently operates 277 stores, with 93 full-line stores, 258 Rack stores, and six Nordstrom Locals, all based in the U.S. The latest expansion will see the addition of new Rack stores, as the company continues to focus on its off-price business.
The Q3 sales for Nordstrom have seen a decrease of 10.3% or $366 million compared to 2019, according to GlobalData's Saunders. However, the company has been making strides in remedying some of these issues, with the assortment now offering a better lineup of brands and compelling products, as noted by Neil Saunders.
The Rack stores, which underperformed in comparison to 2019, with a year-over-year Q3 sales drop of 11.3%, have received positive feedback from customers, according to Erik Nordstrom. Rack stores deliver returns above their capital cost and are the largest source of new customer acquisition.
The Rack stores have also shown improvement in terms of gross margin, expanding by 180 basis points to 35% in Q3. This was due to lower markdowns, inventory productivity, and lower buying and occupancy costs.
In a positive development, the Rack's digital channel is expected to be profitable for the year. The company has also recently shaken up Rack's leadership, which could contribute to the continued growth of the off-price business.
The company expects to open 17 more Rack stores in 2024, in addition to the 23 announced. For fall 2024, there are plans for two new stores in North Carolina near Charlotte (Mooresville and Matthews). For 2026, Nordstrom Rack plans to open five new stores across Ohio, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, and Louisiana, with openings scheduled in autumn and spring of 2026.
