Nova Scotia Boosts Halifax Housing Growth with Interim Planning Area
The Government of Nova Scotia has taken steps to boost housing growth in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, John Lohr, has designated HRM as an interim planning area, enabling certain policies from the Regional Plan for suburban growth while work on the plan continues.
The designation of HRM as an interim planning area is part of a broader effort to 'unlock development' in the municipality. Nine suburban growth area opportunity sites have been identified to facilitate future development. The province is collaborating with the municipality to create a more practical, resident-focused Regional Plan.
The interim planning area order removes obstacles for residential development in HRM by implementing several minimum planning requirements immediately. These orders aim to support housing growth while the Regional Plan is being finalized.
The Government of Nova Scotia's recent orders are set to stimulate housing growth in the Halifax Regional Municipality. By designating HRM as an interim planning area and identifying opportunity sites, the province is working to streamline development processes and create a more resident-focused Regional Plan.
