NSW's Energy Transition: ZEN Energy Transforms Coal Site, WaterNSW Identifies PHES Sites
ZEN Energy is transforming a disused coal facility at Lake Burragorang into a pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) project. This follows WaterNSW's assessment of 41 dams, selecting three for PHES developments that could add 5.2GW to the NSW market by 2034. Meanwhile, ACEN Australia's Phoenix Pumped Hydro Project, with 800MW output, is planned for the Burrendong dam.
WaterNSW has identified Blowering, Burrendong, and Hume dams as suitable sites for PHES developments. While no specific companies have registered projects at the selected dams yet, ACEN Australia has secured a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) for its Phoenix Pumped Hydro Project at Burrendong dam. The NSW government aims to add 16GW of new renewable generation and 42GWh of LDES by 2034, which these projects could support. AGL has proposals for two PHES plants at Glenbawn and Glennies Creek dams, totaling 1,393MW of output.
Several pumped hydro energy storage projects are in the pipeline for NSW, with ZEN Energy's conversion of a disused coal facility and WaterNSW's selected dams contributing to the state's renewable energy objectives. These projects could significantly boost the NSW market's energy storage capacity by 2034.
