Occupational Accidents Drop in Germany in 2020, But One Sector's Rise Unclear

In 2020, the German Social Accident Insurance Association recorded a total of 640,076 occupational accidents. While the hospitality industry saw a significant decrease, the sector with an increased number of accidents remained unidentified due to inconsistent reporting or sector-specific factors.

The hospitality sector led the decline with over 40 percent fewer accidents in 2020. Meanwhile, the construction industry experienced a minimal decrease of 0.1 percent. Overall, companies reported an 11.4 percent drop in accidents compared to the previous year. The varying impacts of corona measures across sectors may have contributed to these fluctuations, though specific details are not provided.

Despite the overall decrease in occupational accidents in 2020, the sector with an increased number of accidents remains unclear due to reporting discrepancies. Further analysis is needed to identify the reasons behind this discrepancy and to target prevention efforts effectively.
