OpenAI Fights Misuse of Its Models, Bans Malicious Accounts
OpenAI has been vigilant in policing misuse of its models, recently banning accounts and disrupting networks that attempted malicious activities. The company has also noted advancements in AI use by authoritarian regimes and changes in threat actor behavior.
OpenAI's models have consistently refused outright malicious requests, including attempts to create malware. In February 2024, the company reported disrupting and banning over 40 networks that violated its usage policies. Notably, OpenAI banned Russian hackers using its AI model to develop a remote access trojan and credential stealers.
OpenAI has also been monitoring the progress of autocratic AI advancements, particularly in China. The company has raised concerns about the potential for authoritarian abuses in online monitoring. Meanwhile, threat actors have been integrating AI into existing workflows rather than creating new ones entirely around AI.
OpenAI has banned accounts suspected of being connected to government entities. One such account was used to develop a proposal for tracking the Uyghur community's travel using an AI-powered social media listening tool. However, there is no evidence identifying a specific government unit behind this banned account.
ChatGPT, OpenAI's popular model, is used more often for beneficial purposes than malicious ones. It is currently estimated that ChatGPT is used three times more often to identify scams than to generate them. OpenAI has also banned accounts using ChatGPT to develop tools for large-scale social media monitoring. Interestingly, threat actors have changed their behavior to remove signs of AI usage in their content, such as em-dashes.
OpenAI continues to demonstrate its commitment to preventing misuse of its models, with a track record of disrupting malicious activities and banning offending accounts. The company remains vigilant in monitoring AI advancements by authoritarian regimes and changes in threat actor behavior.
