Optus Faces Class Action Over Massive 2022 Data Breach
Optus faces a class action lawsuit following a massive cyberattack in September 2022 that compromised the personal information of up to 10 million current and former customers. The breach, described as 'extremely serious', has left customers anxious and seeking compensation.
The data breach exposed sensitive details including names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and in some cases, addresses and ID document numbers. Over 100,000 customers have registered for the class action, with many sharing stories of anxiety, fear, and financial burden. The lawsuit, filed by Slater and Gordon, alleges Optus breached privacy, telecommunication, consumer laws, and internal policies by failing to protect customer data. It is claimed that Optus failed to destroy or de-identify former customers' information and control access to it. Additionally, more than 10,000 customers' personal information was published online when ransom demands were made. The class action also claims Optus breached contractual obligations and its duty of care towards customers.
The class action, filed on behalf of affected current and former customers, seeks compensation for losses including replacing identity documents and preventing identity theft, as well as damages for distress and frustration. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine the extent of Optus' responsibility and the compensation owed to the affected customers.
