Osnabrück's vision for the future: renovating bus stops in phases over the next six years
Pimping Osnabrück's Bus Stops: 2023 Edition
Hop aboard the future, Osnabrück style! This year, the city has given five bus stops a fancy makeover, splashing some serious cash (a cool 750,000 euros, to be exact) to ensure these stops are as fresh as a daisy. The renovated stops include Nordstraße, Osnabrücker Werkstätten, Moskaubad, and Frankfurter Heerstraße—each receiving some much-needed TLC.
The motivation behind these renovations? Prioritizing the comfort and convenience of passengers, especially those with mobility issues, parents lugging strollers, or wee ones learning to walk. To achieve this, the Kassel special kerb, the gold standard for new bus stops in Osnabrück, was installed to bring the bus as close to the curb as possible for effortless boarding and deboarding. It's a win-win for everyone!
To make life even sweeter for visually impaired travelers, a tactile guidance system was added. Essentially, it's a smart flooring system giving users of white canes a helpful guide through the refurbished stops.
Want more goodies? Nordstraße bus stop now sports energy-efficient LED lighting and spiffy bike racks. Plus, the city took the opportunity to revamp and expand the cycling path near the stop, making switching between bike and bus a breeze and aligning with the city's environmental goals.
Get ready for next year, as Osnabrück's bus stop makeover is far from over! Große Schulstraße bus stop and Hiaerm-Gruppe-Straße bus stop are next in line for a total transformation. The Moskaubad bus stop will also receive upgrades on the urban-bound side, with an added bonus of improved bicycle traffic guidance. And once again, the city will be turning to the Lower Saxony State Transport Association for some funding love.
Stay tuned as Osnabrück continues to pave the way for modern, accessible, and eco-friendly public transportation!
