New On-Demand Transit Service Launches in Pembroke, Ontario

Pembroke, Ontario, is introducing a new on-demand transit service called Ottawa River Transit (ORTC) on August 5, 2025. The service, which operates exclusively within the city limits, is part of a three-year pilot project aimed at improving accessibility and connectivity within the community.

Service Details

ORTC will operate using three Dodge ProMaster vehicles, each accommodating up to eight passengers. During peak service hours, two vehicles will be in operation, with an additional unit on standby as a backup. The service will follow a "stop-to-stop" model, with numerous virtual stops distributed throughout the city. Customers will be provided with details of their designated virtual stop upon booking.

Schedule and Service Area

The service will initially operate with summer hours, from 7:00 a.m. to various closing times depending on the day of the week. After Labour Day, service hours will extend to 10:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. No service will be provided on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Booking and Fare

Riders can book their trip based on either departure or arrival time, at least 15 minutes in advance and up to seven days ahead. Booking can be done via a smartphone app, a web browser, or by phone. The fare for ORTC is $5 per ride.

Collaboration and Funding

Blaise Transit is proud to be the technology partner for ORTC and is excited to see the service grow over the coming years. The collaboration between the city and Mobility Transportation Specialists (MTS) has made this project possible. The service is funded partly through property taxes and supported by community collaboration.

Survey and Feedback

The city is planning a formal six-month review and survey of residents to ensure the new service meets the community's needs. Riders are encouraged to rate their experience and leave comments through the Blaise Transit app to help refine and enhance the service.

The Pembroke Business Improvement Area (PBIA) is thrilled about the launch of ORTC, as it will make shopping, dining, and visiting downtown Pembroke easier and more accessible. MTS will provide vehicles, drivers, and customer service for ORTC.

Riders should be at their stop at least five minutes before the scheduled time, as the bus does not wait for late arrivals. For assistance, customers can call the Ottawa River Transit Customer Service team at 613-631-1766.
