Hit the Rails Again: Mannheim-Stuttgart Line Back in Service for Pentecost

Railway service on the Mannheim-Stuttgart route will resume during Pentecost. - Pentecost marks the resumption of operations on the Mannheim-Stuttgart railway line.

Here's some good news for all you commuters! After several weeks of closure, the famed Mannheim-Stuttgart high-speed railway line is back in action as of tonight (21.00 hours). The renovation work on the Freudenstein tunnel near Knittlingen, Enzkreis, has been wrapped up as planned. The railway rep announced operations will dust off without any restrictions. Buckle up travelers, you'll be able to hit the ICE direct connections and reach Frankfurt Airport in just one hour and 17 minutes from Stuttgart once more.

The line had seen its share of hardships since the Easter holiday, with a seven-week closure that disrupted the plans of tens of thousands of travelers. These folks had to endure longer travel times and train cancellations. Long-distance, regional, and freight trains were rerouted, and some connections were even axed. However, the railway spokesperson reported that no complaints were received regarding the closure. They cited successful alternative arrangements as the reason.

Geological hiccups

Troubles underneath the nearly seven-kilometer-long Freudenstein tunnel near Knittlingen (Enzkreis) were the root cause of the renovation work. The tunnel runs through anhydrite-containing rock that expanded due to water ingression. This issue had led to cracks in the tunnel shell from time to time. Before the repairs began, a railway rep warned about geological problems in the tunnel. To secure the tunnel ceiling over a length of 1,000 meters, they'll install wire nets among other measures. The repair bill is estimated to come in at around 7.5 million euros.
