Persistent Threat to Cyclist Safety Along Stargarder Straße Path Remains Unabated

In the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, the cycling route on Stargarder Straße continues to pose hazards for cyclists, with the promised installation of bollards to deter wrong-way drivers still unfulfilled[1]. The installation, originally planned for mid-2023 near Gethsemanekirche, has faced multiple delays, leaving the cycling community in a state of uncertainty and concern.

The absence of these safety measures is particularly concerning given the significant role Stargarder Straße plays as a cycling route. The promised installation of bollards was intended to improve cyclist safety by deterring wrong-way drivers, addressing ongoing safety issues on the route. However, as of July 2025, the dangers on this route persist with no clear resolution in sight.

The Pankow district office, responsible for the installation, has cited "internal reviews" and "staffing shortages" as reasons for the delay. Despite these challenges, the office claims the installation will take place before the end of this year. Yet, without a specified date, the lack of progress continues to cause concern for those advocating for cyclist safety.

Meanwhile, the Senate Transport Administration holds the ultimate decision regarding whether bollards will be installed on Stargarder Straße during the diversion. Regarding the potential impact on the Schönhauser Allee bridge demolition, no direct connection has been established, and it is unlikely that the bollard installation will affect the demolition's timeline or process, based on current publicly available information.

Elsewhere in the district, the traffic-calming "Kiezblock" near Arnimplatz is threatened by the BVG replacement buses scheduled to travel through Schönenfließer Straße from 2027, weighing 20 tons each. Stargarder Straße, however, remains unclear about whether it will become a diversion route during the Schönhauser Allee bridge demolition.

The Pankow district office remains tight-lipped about the potential impact of the bridge demolition on Stargarder Straße, offering little clarity on the matter. As the community awaits the installation of the promised bollards, the cycling artery in Prenzlauer Berg continues to present hazards, underscoring the need for swift action to ensure the safety of its cyclists.

  1. The delay in the installation of bollards on Stargarder Straße, a significant cycling route, raises concerns about environmental-science and public-transit safety, as it fails to address ongoing issues and improve cyclist safety.
  2. The finance department should consider allocating more resources to the Pankow district office to expedite the bollard installation, ensuring the safety of cyclists and supporting the industry's efforts to promote sustainable transportation.
  3. In light of the delayed bollard installation and the threat posed by BVG replacement buses to the Kiezblock near Arnimplatz, it becomes crucial to re examine current transportation policies and consider their impact on environmental-science and cyclist safety.
  4. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, prioritizing public-transit options like cycling routes and implementing safety measures like bollards becomes increasingly important for addressing climate-change and promoting efficient and sustainable transportation.
