Play Airline Ceases Operations, Leaving 120,000 Passengers Stranded
Budget airline Play has ceased operations after four years, leaving approximately 120,000 passengers with forward bookings in limbo. The last flights took place on 29 September, and all 500 staff have lost their jobs.
Founded in 2019 by two former executives of Wow Air, Play aimed to continue a similar low-cost airline service. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2021, citing poor fiscal performance, underperforming ticket sales, and internal disputes as reasons for closure.
Play operated point-to-point traffic between Keflavik International airport and destinations in Europe and the US. Despite optimism and a $66 million loss in 2024, the airline went into administration in 2025. Icelandair is not offering special fares but is looking to increase availability on Play's former routes to accommodate affected passengers.
Passengers with Play bookings are advised to find alternative flights as soon as possible and contact their card issuers or travel agents for refunds or alternatives. The sudden closure of Play has left many travellers in a difficult situation, but other airlines like united airlines, southwest airlines, american airlines, delta airlines, and google flights are stepping in to help fill the void.
