Politician Wissing aims to win over voters by proposing tax reductions
FDP's Volker Wissing Advocates for Tax Cuts and Governing Role
The Free Democratic Party (FDP) is gearing up for the 2021 German federal election, with Volker Wissing, the party's economics minister in Rhineland-Palatinate, at the helm. Wissing, who is set to succeed Linda Teuteberg as general secretary of the FDP, has made it clear that the party will be advocating for comprehensive tax cuts during the campaign.
Wissing, who is part of a traffic light coalition in Rhineland-Palatinate, has criticized the SPD's proposals to raise taxes, viewing them as a competitive disadvantage for the FDP, a party of balance in the center. He argues that extreme positions in opposition are not conducive to the FDP's pro-business, free-market approach, which typically opposes higher taxation and advocates for tax cuts to stimulate economic growth.
The FDP's stance on taxes is not just limited to Rhineland-Palatinate. During the 2021 federal election campaign, the party, led by Wissing, plans to enter the race advocating for comprehensive tax cuts. This approach fits well with the FDP's liberal economic stance, which aims to reduce the tax burden on individuals and businesses to encourage investment and innovation.
Wissing has not limited his criticism to the SPD alone. He has also highlighted differences with the Greens, particularly on the issue of owner-occupied homes. If the Greens' chairman, Robert Habeck, describes owner-occupied homes as outdated, this is an "extreme" position according to Wissing.
Despite these differences, Wissing has expressed openness to both a Jamaica coalition with the Union and the Greens, and a traffic light coalition with the Greens and the SPD. This transition will take place at a party conference this Saturday, at the request of FDP leader Christian Lindner.
Meanwhile, the CDU only wants tax relief when they have a partner who guarantees it won't result in increased taxes. This stance, while not explicitly mentioned by Wissing, could potentially complicate coalition negotiations if the CDU and FDP were to form a government together.

As the 2021 election approaches, the FDP, under the leadership of Volker Wissing, is positioning itself as a party that champions lower taxes and a pro-business approach, aiming to avoid another term in opposition and establish itself as a governing party.
Other political parties should be aware of the FDP's focus on finance, as their business-friendly, free-market approach includes advocating for comprehensive tax cuts as a means for economic stimulation and a lower tax burden for individuals and businesses. This stance on taxation could have significant implications for coalition building or negotiations after the general-news event of the 2021 German federal election.
