Potentially hazardous crossroads in Pirna under control and stabilization efforts
In an effort to enhance traffic safety and reduce accident risks, a new regulation has been announced for the intersection of Struppener Street and Federal Road 172 (B172) in Pirna, Germany. From next week, a left-turn ban for traffic from Struppener Street will be enforced, following the decision made by the Pirna Traffic Accident Commission due to the high number of accidents at this intersection.
The main cause of accidents at the Pirna Sonnenstein intersection has been identified as a conflict between traffic leaving the city on Federal Road 172 and left-turning traffic from Struppener Street. Since 2020, a total of 47 accidents have occurred at this intersection. The poor visibility of the straight-ahead lane of the federal road, often obstructed by waiting left-turners, significantly contributes to these accidents.
The left-turn ban aims to eliminate dangerous traffic conflicts, streamline vehicle movements, and ultimately reduce accidents, thereby enhancing overall road safety for both drivers and pedestrians. Prohibiting left turns removes the risky maneuver of crossing oncoming vehicles, thus significantly reducing the likelihood of angle collisions, which are often severe.
With no left turns allowed, traffic signals and flow patterns become more straightforward, reducing driver confusion and potential hesitation, lowering the chance of accidents. Drivers are often redirected to safer turning options, such as U-turns at designated points or using other streets where left turns can be made without crossing heavy oncoming traffic.
The ban also allows traffic engineers to optimise traffic signals and lane usage for safer, smoother passage, further reducing accident risk. Until the ban takes effect, markings are still being applied at the intersection to guide drivers and prepare them for the changes.
Left turns from the district towards Königstein will no longer be possible at this intersection starting from next week. Traffic leaving the city will be rerouted indirectly via the roundabout at the Sonnenstein Castle. The new regulation is expected to improve traffic flow and safety at this notoriously accident-prone intersection.
The new regulation, focused on industry-wide road safety, targets the conflict-prone intersection of Struppener Street and Federal Road 172 (B172) in Pirna, Germany. By banning left-turns from Struppener Street, the financial cost associated with transportation-related accidents is anticipated to decrease, fostering a safer environment for both drivers and pedestrians.
